Threshold Exclusive: SFD Global by ShortFinal Design Unveiled

February 15, 2019

After his highly successful release of Munich Airport, MisterX6 has decided to go worldwide with his next payware product, SFD Global. The package will overhaul X-Plane’s current non-airport scenery by completely changing the terrain textures, reconstructing certain autogen regions, and adding HD forest and vegetation textures.

Terrain Textures

SFD Global will replace X-Plane’s default terrain textures with new handmade alternatives. The new textures have been crafted using elements from high resolution orthoimagery. Extreme attention to detail and the seamless blending of elements has these previews looking great so far.

Autogen Regions

The package will also include multiple sets of regional autogen. These sets will consist of new detailed buildings with PBR materials and handcrafted autogen tiles with details like trees, cars, and furniture.

The first three regions featured are the Mediterranean, North Africa, and the Middle East and will be included in the initial release. More regions are still to come and will be announced, released and included in an update at a later date. American autogen will not be touched since Laminar's default autogen simulates it well and they're actively expanding on the library.

Landmarks

To complete the product, SFD has also included some famous landmarks located all over the world in SFD Global. Currently, the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur and the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy have both been completed but more will come with time.

It is also certainly worth noting that back in December, Orbx showed off previews of Orbx Global for X-Plane (Link to Article). Since two well accredited developers are working on similar products, it will certainly be interesting to see how this plays out.

SFD Global is still early in development so be sure to stay tuned as progress towards release is made.
