Inter-sim: “Let it Snow” FS2020 Preview Video Released

This is the first article in our coverage of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020. If you would like to learn more about the reasons behind our coverage of this simulator, see our Happy New Year article here.

According to the “feedback snapshot” provided to insider users before Christmas on December 19th, seasons are among the most requested features from Tech Alpha 1 users – something that has not fallen on deaf ears at Asobo, with a new preview video surfacing today entitled “Let it Snow!” over on the Microsoft Flight Simulator YouTube channel.

The brief, 1-minute and 10 second video begins with an establishing shot over New York City, focusing on Central Park while clouds rush by. Time scale speeds up as we see snow progressively layer itself on to the trees in the 3.14km2 greenspace.

After that, we see shots of snow in other cities in the US and Europe covered in snow in full 4K detail. It represents real-world snow cover well, with only light dustings on the tops of high-rise buildings and the roads cleared – the snow plough has already been through.

We’re then thrust out into the country, with large rivers the only colour aside from white in the landscape. Fields are represented in slightly off-white hues, differentiating themselves from each other both with different colours and roads running between them.

Additionally, we’re then moved into an even more remote setting, where a lake has frozen over, and the surrounding trees are all white. In the corner of the shot we can see a larger lake, which has managed to stave off freezing, showing variation in the types of waterways that can freeze over.

After having a close up look, the video takes to the skies with Microsoft Flight Simulator’s already previewed aircraft – the Grand Caravan, A320neo and TBM all make brief appearances, in which wide angle shots show that on the ground, only main roads are ploughed, with residential and access roads still snowed in.

Mountain ranges are also displayed, where trees in the “alpine” section (1000-2000m) are snow-capped, and then a second hue of white takes over once the trees fade away in the high alpine.
