X-Plane 12 Airports Teased on Scenery Gateway

After X-Plane 12 was unveiled by Laminar Research in this year’s FSexpo, anticipation for the new simulator has been quickly building. Earlier this week, the community’s excitement was further stirred when user Triplemon on the X-Plane.org forum pointed out that certain airports on the Scenery Gateway have been fully upgraded for X-Plane 12. Through the pictures displayed in the Gateway’s gallery, we can catch a first glimpse of the upgrades the new simulator brings to building models and ground textures.

In Laminar’s original XP12 announcement, the developers mentioned that Gateway scenery will receive refined ground textures and a brand new control tower. From the images on Gateway, it can be seen that major improvements have been made to the texture of the tarmac and markings on taxiways and runways, giving them a much more definition and a high quality look with better blending into the surroundings. The aforementioned new control towers are also showcased in some of the pictures.

Additionally, the pictures also show the updated grass treatment within the airport, these are procedural and the lawn mowing path can either be generated by the sim or custom adjusted within WED, the equivalent satellite imagery resolution with these orthoimagery-like ground treatment is “around ZL28”. Currently, the exact release date and pricing of X-Plane 12 remain undisclosed by the developers, though previous accounts on social media by the PR team mentioned a Q1 2022 release window. We’ve covered a previous update that involves a thorough walkthrough of the simulator’s lighting engine.
