Introduction

Although a sim update for Microsoft Flight Simulator introducing gliding capability will be available later this year, the development team over at GotFriends have taken matters into their own hands, with their highly detailed Discus 2c Glider for Microsoft Flight Simulator.

Of course, the glider is still limited in some regards due to the default functionality of the simulator. This means that players won’t be able to experience thermals when flying over areas such as roads, parking areas, etc, due to sim limitations. However, the Discus 2c still provides an exceptional gliding experience within Microsoft Flight Simulator.

Brief History

Based on the original Discus design, the Discus 2c glider created by German manufacturer Schempp-Hirth is world-renowned due to its awe-inspiring performance, sleek design, and its stupendously efficient composite design.  Featuring two variants, one with a 15-meter wingspan and the other with 18 meters, the glider is able to reach speeds up to 174 miles per hour; it is truly a technological marvel due to its staggering gliding capability.
Modelling and Texturing

Firstly, the modelling and texturing are done to an incredibly high standard. Within the cockpit, all textures seem relatively high resolution and properly portray the feeling of a new high-end glider. Furthermore, the various little scratches, smudges, and grime located on the instrument panel adds a welcome touch of wear, providing depth to the cockpit and giving it a more realistic feel. On the exterior, the team makes no compromises with custom wing flex, scratches on the windows, and dirt on the underside of the fuselage, capturing the limitless experience of the glider brilliantly. As well, I noticed no modelling issues on the exterior or interior of the aircraft. In short, the visual model is nothing short of spectacular, and it accurately portrays the gracefulness of the Discus 2c glider.

Systems

Unlike others in MSFS, the team does not stop at just visuals, but it also recreates the feeling of a Discus 2c within Microsoft Flight Simulator to an exceptionally high standard. GotFriends have introduced many ‘firsts’ with their glider, including their custom winch launch system, making it the first aircraft within the simulator to contain this feature; the winch mechanism is developed with accurate math calculations that simulate the cables. Additionally, a custom winch launch display was added to control the winch during takeoff. Furthermore, various systems essential to a glider have been included, such as the FLARM (flight and alarm) system, which increases situational awareness by warning pilots of any potential collisions. As well, the digital variometer has been included, which creates an audible beeping noise, alerting pilots to whether the aircraft is ascending or descending. Most notably, however, is the inclusion of the FSSOAR and B-21 navigational displays. This system provides a plethora of information to the pilot, such as a moving map, an attitude indicator, and information on various systems, such as the water ballast. Needless to say, the systems on the Discus 2c Glider are done very well, especially for a freeware aircraft.

Features

Moving on, the aircraft comes with a vast amount of interesting features enhancing the immersion of the aircraft. For example, the cockpit includes a multitude of different animations not seen on many aircraft within the simulator, such as a fully functioning canopy, and a semi-interactive checklist. As well, various weather presets were provided, allowing users to experience optimal gliding conditions; these presets include Alps Summer, Alps Winter, Coastal, Ridge, Cross Country, Standard, and Standard No Wind.

Moreover, the water ballast has been simulated, and users are able to physically drain it via a switch inside the cockpit. To add to this, the effects of water dropping out of the tanks were included, a nifty visual enhancement that complements this functionality. In the grand scheme of things, these details and the feature set delivers a well-rounded aircraft for some immersive gliding experience, at least while users await a built-in implementation of gliders in MSFS. The water ballast effects, various custom animations, and others may not be essential, but they provide a more immersive and enjoyable experience when soaring the skies.

Conclusion

To conclude, despite sim limitations, the Discus 2c glider is a noble and incredible attempt at providing a fun and enjoyable gliding within Microsoft Flight Simulator. Whether flying in VR or regularly, the experience is fantastic and is sure to satisfy those looking for a glider within Microsoft Flight Simulator. With its various custom systems, features, and high-quality texturing and modelling, I would highly recommend trying out the Discus 2c for Microsoft Flight Simulator, especially because it’s free.

Of course, the aircraft can be found on flightsim.to for free. As well, GotFriends stated that a premium upgrade is being developed for the plane. This new version is slated to contain additional features, but will not be a completely new glider.
