A new Monday means another edition of No Money Mondays. As my local city is blanketed in snow today, we’ll be exploring a sunnier destination: the Greek island of Crete, specifically the city of Heraklion. This week, we’re checking out Heraklion International Airport (LGIR) in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020, created by JasonGR.

Opened in 1939, the airport started small, but a few years later, it became a key location during the Battle of Heraklion in World War II. After the war, the airport gradually expanded as commercial services began. Today, it is the second busiest airport in Greece, following Athens International Airport. However, the new Kasteli Airport is scheduled to replace it in 2027, at which point Heraklion International Airport will cease operations. Last year, the airport welcomed over 9 million passengers and offers a variety of year-round and seasonal flights to destinations across Europe.

The freeware scenery package by JasonGR is packed with features that bring the airport to life, making it as realistic as possible.

If you want to explore the airport before it is replaced in real life, you can download Heraklion International Airport for free at flightsim.to.
