Threshold Review: FlightFactor 777 Engine Expansion
August 20, 2025
Introduction
In February, I had the opportunity to review the FlightFactor 777-200ER v2 Ultimate for X-Plane, which is equipped with GE90-90B engines. Since then, the FlightFactor team has released the FlightFactor 777 Engine Expansion. This expansion initially included the Pratt & Whitney PW4090 engines, and just this month, the Rolls-Royce Trent 892 engines were added. The complete pack will feature 27 unique engine models and 18 different engine types designed for all current and future Boeing 777 packages by FlightFactor. I recently had the opportunity to check out the expansion, so let us take a closer look.

First Impressions
After flying the Boeing 777-200ER in X-Plane for some time, I became accustomed to the GE90-90B engines. With the installation of the engine expansion, I was excited to try out both the Pratt & Whitney and the Rolls-Royce engines. Experiencing the unique sounds of these different engine types was certainly enjoyable. Let’s dive deeper into each of the new engine types.

Pratt & Whitney PW4090
Starting with the Pratt & Whitney engines, I immediately noticed the outstanding modelling that has been applied to these new engines, which is on par with the rest of the aircraft. The most notable change, however, is in the sound. The expansion pack includes a completely new sound set for the Pratt & Whitney engines, which highlights the distinct characteristics of this engine type. Additionally, the engines feature a statistically based mathematical model of EPR (Engine Pressure Ratio) that is accurate within 3% of the real engines. This realistic recreation makes the Pratt & Whitney engines perfect for those who prefer to fly with operators that utilise this engine type, such as ANA, in my case.

Rolls-Royce Trent 892
Next, I explored the Rolls-Royce Trent 892 engines. As soon as I loaded a British Airways livery and saw the iconic Rolls-Royce logo, I knew I had selected the correct engines. The modelling of these engines is as detailed as that of both the PW4090 and GE90-90B engines. Like the PW4090 engines, the Trent 892s come with a completely new sound pack, along with a refined EPR and thrust model that is accurate to within 2% of the real counterpart. This creates an excellent representation of the powerful Rolls-Royce engines.

Conclusion and final thoughts
This add-on is perfect for those interested in the two new engine variants currently available, as well as future releases. Priced at $15.00, the engine expansion allows users to mix and match different engine types to reflect the specific ones used by various airlines in real life. Furthermore, this expansion is excellent for anyone looking to experiment with the different engines before deciding on a personal favourite. With all the upcoming variants, this pack will provide even more options to explore in the future. While the current price may seem high for the offerings, considering the planned future additions, it appears quite reasonable.
A big thank you to FlightFactor for providing us with a copy to review!
