Threshold Review: FlightFactor 777 Freighter Upgrade
December 31, 2025
Introduction
Over the past year, FlightFactor has given me the opportunity to review both the FlightFactor 777-200ER v2 Ultimate and the FlightFactor 777 Engine Expansion. The team has continued to innovate and has now released the FlightFactor 777 Freighter Upgrade, which introduces the cargo variant of the well-known Boeing 777 family to the simulator. This new variant is equipped with GE110B1L engines, as well as GE90-115BL engines for those who own the FlightFactor 777 Engine Expansion. It also features the distinctive characteristics specific to the cargo version of the Boeing 777. Let’s take a closer look at this exciting new addition.

First Impressions
The cockpit of the freighter variant has only a few differences from the passenger variant, but it was exciting to see the modifications specific to the freighter included in the expansion pack. Exploring the highly detailed cargo area, which replaced the passenger cabin, was a highlight of the experience. I was pleasantly surprised to find a working taxi camera—something I haven't encountered in any aircraft within the simulator before. Compared to the passenger variant, I noticed no decline in performance, despite the detailed cargo compartment. In fact, the performance feels just as good, if not slightly better, than that of the passenger version. These new features truly bring the aircraft to life, enhancing the overall experience.

Features
The expansion pack introduces the Boeing 777 Freighter (777F) to the simulator. This version differs from the Boeing 777-200ER in several key aspects: its aerodynamics, the cargo compartment replacing the passenger cabin, and its unique freighter systems. These aspects have been accurately replicated in the simulator, complete with realistic aerodynamics tailored for the freighter variants, an exquisitely detailed cargo compartment, and a variety of specialised systems unique to the freighter variant. The cockpit also includes minor differences compared to that of the Boeing 777-200ER. The aircraft is equipped with GE110B1L engines, whose sounds and characteristics have been properly recreated. For those who own the FlightFactor 777 Engine Expansion, the option to utilise GE90-115BL engines is also available.

The good
As an expansion pack, the freighter variant builds upon the solid foundation of the passenger variant from FlightFactor, which is already packed with fantastic features. The addition of freighter-specific functionalities, such as a detailed cargo compartment, enhances the experience while retaining all the good elements of the passenger version. In the passenger variant, pilots could communicate with the purser, but this has been replaced by a load master in the freighter variant, which is a great addition that further enhances the cargo system. The cargo system encompasses both planning and loading functionalities, as well as new ground equipment for loading cargo. Additionally, for those interested in unique operations, there are options for special cargo, such as a Stargate portal and a Formula 1 car. Overall, the expansion successfully complements the impressive features of the passenger variant while adding visual, structural, and system differences relevant to the cargo variant.

Anything bad?
The freighter variant from FlightFactor is just as impressive as their passenger version. It's important to note that the FlightFactor 777 Freighter Upgrade is an expansion pack that requires either the FlightFactor 777-200ER v2 Ultimate or the FlightFactor 777-(200ER)(EE) v2 Ultimate as a base. The base aircraft is priced at $89.00 or $104.00, depending on the version, with the expansion pack costing an additional $30.00. This brings the total to a higher price for those who wish to fly only the freighter variant without the passenger version. However, this is a minor drawback considering the high level of detail and impressive quality of the original passenger variant.

Conclusion and final thoughts
Similar to the passenger variant, the Boeing 777 Freighter from FlightFactor is among the most detailed and impressive aircraft available for X-Plane. The freighter variant enhances everything the passenger version offers while introducing new features exclusive to the freighter, justifying the $30.00 price for the expansion pack. As for any negatives, there are very few to mention. Prospective customers who do not already own the passenger variant should be aware that they will need to purchase the Boeing 777-200ER as a base pack. While this isn't a flaw of the expansion itself, it's worth noting for potential new buyers. Overall, the aircraft is fantastic, and despite my usual lack of interest in freighters, this expansion pack has piqued my curiosity and inspired me to further explore everything this aircraft has to offer.
A big thank you to FlightFactor for providing us with a copy to review!
